Farm Worker Justice

Cesar Chavez's Influence

Picture
Cesar Chavez was such a big player in the changing of social justice for farm workers because he grew up as, learned English to help, and was able to see the awful conditions lived in by the farm workers. He helped tons of families from the horror of being a farm worker. He helped these farm workers because he grew up on one of the farms where this situation was actively controlling the lives of its workers. Cesar was one of the few farm workers that knew English, with the knowledge of this language he could read documents and overhear conversations that told him that the workers were being mistreated and taken advantage of. He also was hired by the C.S.O., who gave him the chance to tour the country where he saw that he hadn’t even been in the worst situation on the farm he grew up on. Cesar Chavez was such a big player in the changing of social justice for farm workers because he grew up as, learned English to help, and was able to see the awful conditions lived in by the farm workers.

According to Learning About Justice From the Life of Cesar Chavez, farm workers at this time, the 50’s and 60’s, lived in rundown, filthy, small houses with all the other workers. They were crammed in with each other all through the night. When the sun rose each worker would get up early and go straight into the fields to nearly break their back working incredibly hard all day for a tiny payment. This work in the fields was not only for the adults, but also for the children as young as five were out working. Most cannot imagine working like this at such a young age, but for them it was the way they lived, this was how Cesar Chavez grew up. Since he was very young and had much of his life ahead of him, he wanted to change the way things worked at these plantations, his childhood was the beginning of his stand against this social injustice (9).

According to Learning About Justice From the Life of Cesar Chavez, when Cesar was growing up he, unlike most farm working kids, learned English. He was taught the basics, but in order to be fluent in it he had to spend all of his little free time learning on his own. Once Cesar was fluent in English he was able to overhear conversations and read documents about the farm workers. He learned that the way they were being treated was much worse than other humans, and that the workers were being incredibly underpaid. Once Cesar had found this out he was frustrated and felt a need to stand up against the injustice he was faced with. He began to teach other farm workers English and of the issue they had, he was creating a group that would put together a peaceful force to break down the oppression of the farm owners (13-14).

According to Learning About Justice From the Life of Cesar Chavez, the Community Service Organization (C.S.O.) saw how Cesar was standing up for himself and other farm workers in an intelligent way and they decided to hire him. Cesar agreed to work for them as the man who would go around the country and find families in grave need of assistance and help them (17). With this new endorsement he saw that the situation he grew up in was not even the worst of the worst, there were farms where people practically slept in piles for even lower pay than his family was getting, (“Enchanted Learning,” Cesar Chavez: Labor Leader). According to Learning About Justice From the Life of Cesar Chavez, this motivated him even more to want to change the life of farm workers. Cesar then created United Farm Workers (U.F.W.), their mission was to help a ton of farm working families out of their farms, or improve their conditions on these farms. The U.F.W. was very successful, and helped many desperate families, and improved the lives of tons of workers (18).

Cesar did so much for those who lived in the oppression of their owners throughout his life. His death was a sad time for many and lots of families who he had assisted grieved the loss. Even though he is gone, his story of growing from a farm worker to a successful man in the world of those in horrible farm working conditions lives on. He grew up a child of a farm working family, he learned and taught English to help the other farm workers understand they were being taken advantage of, and he created the U.F.W. to ensure the rights of, and to protect the justice of the farm workers, he was a major player in the life of farm workers. Cesar Chavez was such a big player in the changing of social justice for farm workers because he grew up as, learned English to help, and was able to see the awful conditions lived in by the farm workers.
